At Gil-Son Construction, we believe in being a dedicated construction partner, a champion of safety practices, and a proud supporter of the communities we work in.
Originally started as a small, general contracting company that specialized in office fit-ups, we have expanded to our current role as one of the leading providers of electrical and mechanical contracting in Atlantic Canada.
In May of 2014, Daniel Hiltz took the helm of Gil-Son Construction as Owner & President and started to grow the company. Armed with 23 years in multi-trade work, he was able to acquire two Gil-Son employees, Brittany Harpell and Russell MacDonald. These dedicated and hard-working individuals are still with him today. A short time later, Daniel was joined by his first certified electrician, William Bonang. Through hard work and long hours, William was invaluable in helping Daniel get the business off the ground. Colin Campbell came aboard a few months after and brought 30 years experience to become the Lead Electrical Estimator & Senior Project Manager. Later that year, Donald Hiltz joined as a strategic partner and with his 40 years of industry knowledge was instrumental in helping move the company forward on a solid footing. This was also the year that Gil-Son took on its first major project with Irving Shipbuilding doing Machine Shop East renovations, entrusted with completing the electrical and lighting fit-up for the office spaces. In 2014, we secured 173 projects.
In 2016, we celebrated the milestone of 1,000 secured projects—and kept right on working! That year, we helped supply skilled trades on an as-needed basis to support the shipbuilding and ship refit activities at Irving Shipbuilding and worked as the general contractor to construct a new Jetty NF at CFB Halifax. We also expanded the company in two important ways. We hired David Morash to establish an HVAC-R, Propane and Natural Gas service department and were able to bring on Don Hartlen, P.Eng to lead an in-house Mechanical Engineering Support team. We replaced 31 water source heat pumps at Halifax West for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education as well as completing new electrical distribution to the Bell Aliant building, and a new back-up generator, fuel storage, and ventilation and cooling upgrades.
While celebrating our 2,000th secured project milestone in 2017, we also opened our sheet metal fabrication shop under our Mechanical Department. Our big projects of the year included building new electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems for Newbridge Academy, completed in under 5 months. We also completed industrial electrical installation, pipe spool fabrication and process piping installation for the Moose River Gold Mine under a fast-paced schedule and in a remote location. We also performed electrical and mechanical upgrades at Woodside Industries, including HVAC, process piping and industrial electrical systems. Finally, we worked on the Sustane Technologies Waste Recycling Facility—a first of its kind facility in a remote location—where we provided facility HVAC, electrical, process piping, process equipment installation, and commissioning assistance.
Keeping right on track, by 2018 we had over 3,000 secured projects. We also started a two-year project to complete the new drill shed training facility at CFB Halifax. This will include facility electrical distribution, plumbing, and HVAC. We were also proud to complete the plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems for the new arena at Saint Mary’s University as well as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing installation for O’Reagan’s Re-Con Centre.
With Gil-Son Construction you will experience a unique working partnership that will result in a job well done.
